German button mushroom production reached record level in 2015

The German mushroom producers reached an excellent result last year.

The Central Horticultural Association (ZVG) cited the German association of mushroom growers (BDC) and stated that a total 67,000 metric tons of button mushrooms were produced in 2015. This has increased continuously over the last years, it was 62,000 tonnes in 2013 and 64,000 tonnes in 2014. Furthermore, the share of fresh produce has increased significantly, stated the BDC chairman Michael Schattenberg.

The 60,000 metric tons of fresh button mushrooms is the best result ever. However the 7,000 metric tons of button mushrooms used for processing, show a clear decrease. The production of other mushroom varieties, such as oyster mushrooms and shiitake, increased to 2,800 metric tons. An increase of 300 metric tons compared to the previous year. And the BDC still sees a large potential in the German production of those mushroom varieties.
